I’m only surprised when people recognize my voice when doing the character. Because I do it different; the Batman voice is a different sound. But sometimes, the Bruce Wayne voice is very close to mine. And sometimes I’ll be in the strangest situations and you know, it’s a huge fanbase. And I always think it’s a totally anonymous job. It’s the fun of the job; it’s totally anonymous.
And I was once in the Hollywood Post Office parking lot on my way to just bring mail to the postal box. So I have nothing; I had left everything else in the car. I just had my mail and I was running across the parking lot—it was six am on a Sunday morning—I just wanted to put the stuff in the mailbox. I was on my way to shoot something. And this guy—this homeless guy—is in the parking lot and he goes,
“Hey buddy, have you got any money?”
And I said um, “I really don’t. I have nothing. All I have is my mail,”
And he said, “Oh. My. God. Are you Kevin Conroy?”
And I thought he was reading my mail or something and I said, “Yeah?”
He said, “YOU’RE BATMAN!”
I said, “How did you know that?”
He said, “There’s a TV store down on Hollywood Blvd and I watch your show everyday!”
[laughs]
He said, “I watched the credits and I knew I knew your voice!”
I said, “That’s unbelievable!”
But I mean the audience is so wide and diverse that you get recognized in the strangest places!
